About
Saint John’s Arboretum encompasses the
grounds of Saint John’s Abbey & Universi-ty.
Saint John’s is advantageously located
in the unique area of terminal moraines
(glacial deposits) that distinguish central
Minnesota. Our 2,830 acres contain the
highest concentration of native plant com-munities
in the area, including oak and
maple-basswood forests, tamarack and
mixed-hardwood swamps and wet mead-ows.
Since 1856, the Benedictine monks who
have lived on and worked the land at
Saint John’s have placed a high value on
preserving, sustaining, and improving the
land. This long history of environmental
stewardship, an enduring sense of place,
and the educational mission of Saint
John’s University inspired the designation
of these lands as a natural Arboretum in
1997.
Preservation, sustainability, and restora-tion
are principles that guide the manage-ment
of the Arboretum. A strong empha-sis
on educational outreach offers the pub-lic
many opportunities to benefit from Ar-boretum
activities.
Mission
· Preserve the native plant and wild-life
communities of the Arboretum
lands;
· Provide opportunities for education
and research;
· Model practices of sustainable land
use;
· Make accessible a natural environ-ment
that invites spiritual renewal.
Vision
Saint John’s Arboretum celebrates the
unique beauty and richness of God’s cre-ation
in central Minnesota and fosters
the Benedictine tradition of land stew-ardship,
education, and environmental
respect.

Education & Research
Saint John’s Arboretum is a rare, natural,
living laboratory for environmental educa-tion
and research. Our environmental edu-cation
is focused on hands-on science in the
areas of forest, wetland and prairie ecology;
global climatic change and human impacts
on the environment; sustainability; and
other topics.
Through understanding the complexities of
the relationships between human and natu-ral
environments, we can begin to recog-nize
the complexities of the diverse rela-tionships
in our local communities. This
understanding not only supports our mis-sion
to preserve natural spaces for the good
of the environment, but helps to build a
corps of leaders engaged in sustaining their
local communities.
The Arboretum offers educational events
and programs for all ages and backgrounds
ranging from preschool to adult.
