FIRST 5O YEARS OF THE COLLEGE OF SAINT BENEDICT (CSB)
Sister Mary Grell, president (1963-1968) initiated the next 50 years of the college, the era of incorporating the new Benedicta Arts Center into the college's life and way of thinking. She gave the college an important thrust forward in hiring a full-time Director of Public Relations and Development, Paul Mulready. Paul began by concentrating on grants and immediately obtained one from the Warner Foundation to fund the formal opening of the Benedicta Arts Center for which the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra would play."(This orchestra has continued to give concerts in the BAC - they appreciate the good acoustics due to a tune-able auditorium." Sister Mary also paved the way for the first lay president (1968-1974). [Though Sister Mary Grell investigated the feasibility of realizing the project dear to her heart, that of establishing a major in nursing education, the project had to be postponed during her term for financial reasons but later it did become a reality.]
Sister Mary Grell initiated the CSB thrust for the next 50 years and paved the way for the appointment of lay presidents. Dr. Staley Idzerda (1968-1974) followed her presidency as the first lay president of CSB.
