FIRST 5O YEARS OF THE COLLEGE OF SAINT BENEDICT (CSB)
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, religious communities were advised by the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) to separately incorporate their colleges and major health-care institutions. The primary reasons given for this action were: to limit the religious community's liability exposures, to allow for a more direct and effective management of these complex institutions, to ensure a better response to state and federal governments' demands for accountability, to lesson the financial responsibilities of the religious community and to be eligible for obtaining government funding.
In 1961, Mother Henrita Osendorf and her Council separately incorporated the College of Saint Benedict. However, it took years to change the working relationships between the college and the Sisters. For example, the Community Chapter and Council continued to approve major expenditures of the college and the Board of Directors continued to be composed of Sisters for the next seven years. It took years to work out the day-to-day complexities of separating the two entities that had operated as one institution for 50 years.
