Description
FIRST 5O YEARS OF THE COLLEGE OF SAINT BENEDICT (CSB)
During the first 45 years of the college, the prioress, as president of the corporation of the Sisters of St. Benedict, was ex-officio the president of the college. This meant that she was also the president of the college's Board of Trustees and the Board of Advisors. Mother Cecilia Kapsner, known as the builder of the chapel and Teresa Hall, served as college president from 1913-1919; Mother Louise (Louisa) Walz 1919-1937; Mother Rosamond Pratschner 1937-1949; Mother Richarda Peters from 1949-1958."
One notable contribution of the prioresses to the college was the insistence on having a qualified faculty and administration. Although the prioresses themselves did not always have the qualifications for their ex-officio role as president of the college, they appointed chief administrators (all but one) who had a Ph.D., and they provided the same opportunity for higher degrees to many of the faculty members.
