FIRST 5O YEARS OF THE COLLEGE OF SAINT BENEDICT (CSB) "In League with the Future"
"Students of Yesterday; Students of Today; Faculty and Friends! I am delighted to tell you the story of our first 50 years. I have been a part of it for 49 years. I arrived here as a student in the fall 1914, when the college was just one year old. What I share with you is first-hand information. In addition, I have read all of the reports of the deans and presidents; interviewed everyone who was here and would likely know the facts - a few hundred hours of preparatory labor! Thanks to all who helped assemble materials. It is my regret that much has to be omitted since I have 45 minutes to cover 50 years - not even a minute per year! My method is chronological in following the women who created this story and I take leaps forward to make the suitable comparisons.
The founding of the college by the Sisters of St. Benedict is a magnificent story that I'd like to title, "In League with the Future." That title is inspired by a quotation in Henrik Ibsen's "Letter to George Brandes" (January 3, 1882)" "I hold that (person) is in the right who is most closely in league with the future." Life and institutions always change, always grow, always develop. Conservatives may slow up development because they are opposed to change; progressive people are in league with the future because they embrace change, progress and development. And they are most often right; in tune with the reality of change.
The progressive women, in league with the future, who brought our college into being in 1913 were: - Mother Cecilia Kapsner and her officers -builders of St. Teresa Hall and the chapel in " 1911-1914
- the three Sisters Dominica Borgerding, Adlegundis Bergmann and Olivia Egan, aflame with ambition for a college at St. Benedict's. __________________ (Gable, OSB)
