RENOVATION OF SACRED HEART CHAPEL SAINT BENEDICT'S MONASTERY, ST. JOSEPH, MN " 1982-1983
In the winter of 1982-1983 when most of the outdoor work on the addition to the chapel was finished, the construction workers began the final interior renovations of the chapel proper. With the sanctuary stripped bare and the new portion of the west nave in place, the demolition of the elevated sanctuary floor and altar platform began. The vibrations of the jack-hammering shook the entire building and left tons of debris. The wood floors were replaced with cement and quarry tiles. The movable scaffoldings were put in place to complete the work of renovation: re-plastering; removing the stained glass windows and light fixtures; installing new windows, lights and public address system; and finally, painting.
On June 13, 1982, the Eucharist, celebrating Corpus Christi and Silver Jubilees, was offered for the last time in chapel until December 22. The sisters attended daily Eucharist in St. Joseph's Church and on Sundays in the auditorium of the Benedicta Arts Center.
