SACRED HEART CHAPEL INTERIOR - SAINT BENEDICT'S MONASTERY, ST. JOSEPH, MN 1914-1937
Among the valuable sketches of altars, of which George Studahar had a large collection, was one designed by Andrea Puteo, SJ, at Rome in 1719, which was never executed. That drawing furnished the idea which Mr. Hackner developed to harmonize with the design of the sanctuary. The altar proper is pure white carrara marble inlaid with Sienna panels, imported from Pietasantra, Italy. It was surrounded by eight columns of "Old Convent" Sienna marble, which rested on bases of Georgia Creole marble. Upon the entablature stood six large angels, dressed in gilt levitical garments, holding aloft a large golden, jeweled crown which formed a canopy for the altar and took the place of the silk canopy covering for the tabernacle prescribed by the rubrics. The life-sized, Carrara-marble statues of St. Scholastica and St. Benedict held prominent places on either side of the columns. The cornerstone was placed in the base of the granite pilaster behind the celebrant's chair on the north (right) side of the sanctuary."(CHRONICLES, pp. 142-143)
