SBM.11b33 The nearly completed dome of Sacred Heart Chapel
Description
CONSTRUCTION OF SACRED HEART CHAPEL, SAINT BENEDICT'S MONASTERY, ST. JOSEPH, MN "
(May 1913) The top of the cross of the completed dome measured 135 feet from the ground. The dome itself is 87 feet; the top is made of structural iron, steel lathing, concrete and covered with copper. The copper finish on the dome remained black awaiting weather treatment that would turn it to the desired copper-green color. Because it was a slow process, the dome was given a special chemical treatment forty years later to accelerate the reaction.
