Large Crowd at Food Panel Requests Lower Prices
Two Looks at the Pool

Nearly 300 students attended the food panel discussion sponsored by SAB on Nov. 8. The purpose of the panel was to explain the adminis-tratoin's viewpoint and for students to air their complaints, questions and suggestions concerning St. Ben's a la carte system and the food exchange with St. John's.
The panel members were Jerry Mead and Sr. Cecilia Prokosch, managers of SJU and CSB food services; Warren Janson and Fred Manuel, SJU and CSB managers, and Dr. Sylvester Theisen, campus coordinator.
Many questions were asked and many opinions expressed. At times things appeared to be bogged down in details; however, a thorough understanding of the history and facts was necessary to reaching some understanding.
The chief student demand concerned the meal prices at St. John's. The members of the panel agreed that it would very likely be possible to change the $1.50 charge
for lunch and supper to $1.25. This change, however, must still be negotiated with the two administrations.
The panel revealed no sign of progress towards setting up an a la carte food system at SJU.
According to Dr. Theisen, if there are any changes made it will be due considerably to the large turnout of Bennies at the panel Monday night.
There will be a similar panel discussion held at St. John's on Monday night, November 22.
President Idzerda's Plan
President Idzerda's plans are to break ground for the swimming pool as soon as the frost melts this spring. This means the pool will be ready for summer session 1972. The swimming pool will be a 75x45 ft. long rectangular, standard collegiate pool meeting Natinoal C o 1 le g e Athletic Asociation and AAU specifications. Depth will vary from 10 to 3 feet. The cost of the pool will include a deck and locker room accommodations for men and women. Extras such as vari-
ous size diving boards, observation windows, saunas, sun deck and spectator seats can be added depending on how large a financial loan subsidy CSB can get from the federal government. The loan will, he hopes, be okayed by Dec. 1, 1971, and the architectural plans agreed upon by Jan. 1, 1972. The pool will be -maintained by a small charge to each student, on both campuses, similar to the activity fee we now pay. Bennies and Johnnies will use the pool for physical education classes,
Joint Judicial System
Chris Rose
SAB has adopted a new joint judicial system, final-ization of which is pending upon the approval of St. John's, USG (Undergraduate Student Government).
Hall Boards will serve as basic units in each dorm, having jurisdiction in all minor infractions committed within that particular dorm.
Members will consist of a representative from each floor, an "at-large" representative and one resident faculty member.
Major infractions — those which endanger another, interfere with an individual's rights or result in damaged
facilities—will be taken before a Joint Hearing Board, consisting of students and
faculty selected from St. Ben's and St. John's. This board, in addition to reviewing cases and appeals, may make decisions as to what action to recommend in a case, including suspension or expulsion if considered necessary.
The purpose of the joint system is not to reflect civil law. Rather it is to allow flexibility for different people and yet still have some kind of "court" for grievances. The most emphasis is placed on the Hall Boards, with the understanding that what the board rules is decided by the members as just and fair judges. Having a joint board will also clear up the problem of judging rule infractions committed by Johnnies on CSB campus and Bennies at SJU.
Red Cross programs, co-recreational swimming and team c o m p e t ition. The townspeople will also be able to rent the pool for their own use. The pool plan, when carried through, will provide the students with an opportunity to learn to swim, work-study jobs, and a recreational outlet. _
Miss Henke's Hopes According to Miss Henke, Phy - Ed Department chairman, 'the earliest the pool will be serviceable will be! January of 1973. The type of pool she would like to see built would be a 45x75 foot L-shaped pool. The L section would be deep for diving with a one meter diving board. The rest of the pool would be 3M> to 5 ft. in depth. Observation windows would be underwater, and maybe a sauna would be installed for both men and women. Locker rooms for men and women would accommodate up to one hundred swimmers. Instructors' offices would be located in the building. Seating for 75-100 people would be near the pool. Another idea is sunbathing on the roof with a greenhouse-type roof for sunbathing in the winter. Swimming will become a required class for freshmen. Hopefully a complete Red Cross safety program will be offered, and scuba diving might be taught. The pool will serve as a teaching station and a recreational site not only for Johnnies and Bennies but also for the people of St. Joe and alumni.
