LouAnne Johnson speaks at CSB
The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University will host speaker LouAnne Johnson, the real-life hero of the movie Dangerous Minds, on Thursday, May 2, 7:30 p.m., at the Benedicta Arts Center Auditorium on the CSB campus.
Through Johnson's work with students who have faced drug problems, threats of violence, broken homes and gender and race barriers, she has learned the importance of education. Her unique experiences will bring a quality motivational lecture to the students of CSB/S JU. Her compassion, energy, respect and strength will force you to look at the social problems which face many of today's youth. The topics she covers are consistent with the mission which CSB/ SJU tries to fulfill. To help incorporate the goals of the mission with her lecture, activities will be planned around the event for students to better process these ideas and make them a reality in our own community.
Freedom Club Elections
Elections for the Freedom Club will be held on Friday, May 3rd, at 8:30 p.m. at Seton 22. The following positions are available: Anarchist Cook Book Interpreter, Web Site Maintainer, United States Post Office Relations Officer, Historical Revisionist and Public Relations Officer.
The candidates are encouraged to wear proper unabomber attire and present a short speech concerning their personal interpretation of the unabomber manifesto. If elected, officers are expected to live a secluded life in the backwoods of the SJU campus where they will diligently work to assure that the opressed ideals of the unabomber live on.
Bishop Robert Anderson to Receive Colman Barry Award from SJU
SaintJohn'sUniversitywillpresentitsl996 Father Colman J. Barry Award for Distinguished Contributions to Religion and Society to Bishop Robert Anderson, former bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota. The award will be presented to Anderson as part of the University's annual Fellows Dinner on Friday May, 10.
The award recognizes the contributions that Father Barry, who died in 1994, made during his life of scholarship and teaching. The author of several books, including his three-volume Readings in Church History and Worship and Work, Father Barry began his teaching career at Saint John's in 1952.
Father Barry played a role in the establishment of the Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research at Saint John's, and was also responsible for the creation of the Jay Phillips Chair in Jewish Studies, the first such chair at an American Catholic college.
His creative leadership also set the roots on the SJU campus for Minnesota Public Radio, which has grown to become one of the top public radio networks in the nation.
Polio's Legacy: An Oral History
Edmund Sass, professor of education at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University, recently published a book titled Polio's Legacy: An Oral History. The book describes what it was like to live with and suffer the after affects of paralytic polio.
The book provides information about the disease and includes information about the history, current status and late effects of polio. Narrative stories throughout the book give personal accounts of 35 polio survivors. The stories include experiences at different stages of the illness including hospital and out-patient treatment programs as well as social experiences. Sass also analyzes the struggles people faced in a time where political correctness and handicapped availability did not exist.
Pastiche To Offer Performance at SJU
Pastiche, a chamber music ensemble featuring artists and professors from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University, will present a concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 3, in the Stephen B. Humphrey Theater of Saint John's University.
Members of the performing group include CSB/SJU music department faculty members Carolyn Finley, Bruce Thornton, Lucia Magney, Patricia Kent and Dale White. The ensemble also includes the talents of Karen Bottge, Bryant Julstrom, Marion Judish and Susan Dubin.

Minnesota Center Chorale performs
The Minnesota Center Chorale, directed by Philip Welter, will present "The Creation" by Franz Josef Haydn at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 12 at the Benedicta Arts Center, College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph.
The Minnesota Center Chorale performance will include soloists and full orchestral accompaniment. In honor of Mother's Day, each of the first 150 women to arrive will receive a free carnation compliments of St. Cloud Floral.
Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors/students and $5 for children under 12. Tickets may be purchased at Byerly's, Al's Music, Schmitt Music, and at the Benedicta Arts Center or phone 363-5777.
Blood drive
On May 6 and 7, the American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at St. John's University in the Old Gym. The Bloodmobile will be open from 12:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. on Monday and 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. You are encouraged to support and participate in the bloodmobile by donating blood or volunteering your time.
The following groups actively participated in the last six bloodmobiles and were instrumental to their success: student senate, nursing club, Joint Events Council, EMTs, premed students, RAs, Campus Video, ROTC and members of the SJU administrative and support staffs.If interested in working, contact the Residential Life Office, 363-2734.
Once again the University of St. Thomas has challenged our school to a "Battle for the Blood," a contest to see which school donates the most pints of blood. St. John's has defeated St. Thomas at every bloodmobile since the contest was started two years ago, but St. Thomas almost defeated us last fall. Collecting blood helps save lives. Blood donors they give the gift of life.
Eila Perlmutter gives reading
Eila Perlmutter, Emeritas professor of Engilsh at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University, will give a public reading of her new novella Sirkka, on Sunday May 12, at 4 p.m. in the CSB Haehn Campus Center, Alumnae Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Perlmutter, a published writer of both fiction and essays, based her book on her life as a young girl growing up in Finland and the Arrowhead Region of Northern Minnesota.
The first copies of Sirkka will be available for purchase and signing on May 12 at 3:30 p.m. before and immediately following the reading.
Minnesota Orchestra performs at BAG
The Minnesota Orchestra will perform a concert of allAmerican, all-20th century compositions at the Benedicea Arts Center at the College of Saint Benedict on Thursday, May 9 at 8 p.m.
Programmed by William Eddins, the concert aims to look at the classical music of the Americas through music of great appeal. "One of my goals is to destroy the prejudice against music of our own time, which has been propagated mainly by the attitudes of the music industry itself," says Eddins. "This music should be standard repertory in the concert hall.

VISTO honored
The Volunteers in Service to Others (VISTO) program at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University has been selected as one of Minnesota's 1996 Star Youth Service Programs.
Representatives of the VISTO program were invited to attend a special recognition ceremony at the Minnesota State Capital Rotunda on Wednesday, April 24, at 2 p.m. to celebrate the proclaimed Youth Service Recognition Day.

Created to promote community service on the CSB/SJU campuses, VISTO was selected from over 75 nominations as an excellent example of youth service and service-learning practice. Currently, about 400 students from both campuses are involved in the 20 different service programs available through VISTO.
Schumacher awarded
Deborah Schumacher, daughter of Donald and Cathaine Schumacher, of Elk River, Minn., is the recipient of the Outstanding Senior Social Work Student Award from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University.
The award is given in honor of Cathan Culhane OSB, former head of the social work department for CSB/SJU. Through her devotion to the colleges and to the social work profession, he has impacted many lives.
The criteria for the recipient of the award includes a service contribution to the community, demonstration of leadership, excellence in verbal and written communication, demonstration of adherence to the social work code of ethics and other attributes, contribution or achievements.
