On Friday, April 22, the Student Academic Board of theCollege of St. Benedict held its re-elections in the Student Center and Mary Commons. Junior Kate Dugan, new SAB Vice President of Student Relations, ran unopposed for her position.
Heather Winkels will be next year's Public Relations chair. She was opposed by candidates Tammy Downs and Cheryl Stevens. Stevens was disqualified for leaving a campaign poster up after the deadline for removal.
"It was a good idea to have the re-elections held in both places this time; it makes it more accessible for the students," Dugan said.
Many SAB representatives believe that low first election voter turnout and a small number of candidates do not necessarily
parallel student apathy concerning college government.
"I can understand that both students and candidates had many other things on their minds concerning the unusually large amount of homework and studying students must finish before spring break. Also, in the future the elections will probably be held in a more accessible area for CSB students, Mary Commons. However, I be-Ijeve that those who ran unopposed this time would have won anyway, even with competition. The winners are very qualified," said Coco Wilson, member of the Election Task Team.
Not only was it important for the student body to select candidates for the upcoming Executive Board, but the candidates shared the ballot with potential amendments for the SAB constitution.
"It was imperative that at least three-fourths of one-third of the student body voted. This
Phase one of construction begins

Phase one of the construction and renovation projectis underway at the College of St. Benedict. On Monday, April 18, ground was broken in order to make way for the new main entrance off of College Avenue.
This first phase of the construction includes: a new east entrance, where a larger rendition of the granite entry gate that exists at the current main entrance will be built; renovation of parking lot five which would split it into two separate lots; and laying of sewer and water piping to accomodate plans for the new CSB student center. Construction of the Center should begin in mid-September, 1994.
Merlyn Jerzak, Director of Physical Plant at CSB, who heads all the construction projects, apologized for the inconvenience.
"With all the projects to be accomplished, the parking lot construction caught me off guard. I apologize to all the students, including SJU and off-campus strudents and encourage them to take the bus through the end of the school year. We should have everything in shape by next fall," Jerzak said.
Jerzak is very pleased that construction is going so well. This first phase should be completed by June 1.
Mark Conway, Executive Director of Development at CSB, discussed the financing options for the new entrance. The total cash value cost ofthis project is $650,000. Conway remains optimistic about raising the needed funds.
"We have already received three in-kind contributions [of services]," Mark said.
Blattner and Sons donated part of their services to provide the excavation work. Baverley Brothers donated partial services to provide necessary curb, gutter and blacktop for the roadway and parking lot. A third party donated all landscaping material, which includes expensive shrubberies and trees.
In addition to these donated services, CSB is in the process of finalizing a cash grift from a family "with a lot of connections" here at CSB and SJU. They have already given a firm verbal commitment of $100,000. Another cash donation of $100,000 to $300,000 is in the process of being aquisitioned.
Ground will be broken on CSB's new Student Center sometime in mid-September. Rennovation of the Old Gym in order to expand office space that will house Campus Ministry and student clubs and organizations will begin sometime over J-Term. If everything goes as planned, these constructions should be completed by the '95-96 school year.
meant that we needed 300 votes. Fortunately, we received 303. Now we have a working constitution for next year," said new president, Jen Goering.
The new amendments passed are as follows: the positions of Trustee and Student Leadership and Development Committee were added, the names of the positions of secretary, treasurer and cultural pluralist were changed to administrative assistant, vice president of finance and Cultural Affairs Board Chair, respectively.
The SAB constitution, like most others, consists of the preamble, by-laws which entail the responsibilities of each position, names of positions, and goals/purposes of the Executive Board. Parts of the constitution can be changed when students make a proposal to the members of the SAB. Next, the proposal has to be supported by the majority of the Executive Board. Finally, three-fourths of one-third of the student body must vote in favor of any addition or

John's biggest capital campaign goal was
only $10 million.
Dady contributed the sucess to a combination of hard work and generous people.
"Some leaders stepped up early on and gave those leadership gifts to give the campaign some momentum," Dady said.
Patrick Murphy, SJU 79, claimed the outstanding results were a positive reflection on the quality education of the Benedictine community.
"The success of the campaign is a testament to the tradition and history of St. John's since it's founding in 1857,"Murphy said. "People, alumni, foundations and major benefactors are begining to recognize the importance of a quality standard education—one that teaches strong values amidst our society today."
Not only did the Fellows Day celebrate the conclusion of a very successful campaign it also recognized 69 new contributing members, and welcomed esteemed guest Ms. Amy Grant, the 1994 Pax Christi recipient, her husband, Gary Chapman, and singer/ songwriter Michael W. Smith into the St.

The SAB is currently discussing the possibility of adding two cable channels, WGN-channel 14 and Comedy Central channel 3. The Cable Access Committee is asking for $1,620 for the initial hook-up fee. Although the CSB/SJU administration promised to contribute $3,300 for hardware that is needed for the initial access, it must be decided where funds for subscriptions would come from. A possibility is that the fee would be a part of the activity fee that each student pays before the start of the upcoming school year.
"The students really do have a choice," Goering said. "We [SAB] are here to serve the students. Feel free to contact us with comments and questions. Our ultimate goal is for positive change."
The SAB invites students to attend their meetings every Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in HAB 121.
