Intramurals offer fitness and fun
by Michele Herman independent staff writer
Not everyone here at the College of SL Benedict and St John's University is involved in a junior varsity or varsity sports team, but many students are involved in the intramural program to have flan, as well as to be competitive.
Tlie goals of the department are to provide many activities so that everyone's exercise and activity needs are met," said CSB intramural director Eileen Bttzan "We try to build community through sporting activities.11
To accomplish these goals, the intramural department has three essential tasks: planning special events, devising ongoing fitness programs and schedulng regular competitive leagues.
Recently, as part of the program, the department has planned several upcoming one-day events, including CSB vs. the University of St Thomas three-on-three basketball jamboree, a spring mixed doubles tennis tourney, a croquet tourney and the annual 5K Run Against Hunger.
The three-on-three tournament will take place April 8 in Claire Lynch Hall, with an entry fee of $75 per team, which includes entry into the tournament three tickets to the Umberwolves vs. Denver Nuggets game on April 10, three tournament T-shirts, a chance to play at the Target Center, transportation to the Target Center and chances to win additional door prizes.
Door prizes include Timberwolves hats, sweatshirts, T-shirts and other donations. The team that wins the three-on-three tournament at CSB goes on to play during half-time at the Target Center
April 10.
The Run Against Hunger, which will be held April 30 at 2 p.m. at Claire Lynch, is another one-day event sponsered by the intramural program. Runners and walkers have the option to donate a $1 entry fee for the Youth Ending Hunger (YEH) organization. For the first time ever, the 5K run/walk will be open to members of St. Joseph and surrounding communities.
Other intramural department programs include the Fitness Club, a program developed by the intramural department which offers three different personal exercise programs to students, faculty and staff.
Each program provides challenges that suit the participants1 exercise needs and fitness levels. Incentives are provided to keep exercisers motivated.
For example, when members of the Walk-Your-Sox-Off program reach their semester goals, they receive a pair of CSB Fitness Club socks.
The department also designed the Century Club to encourage participants to exercise on a regular basis to improve their cardiovascular fitness. Participants receive water bottles when they reach 100 points worth of fitness activities.
League sports have been a mainstay of the intramural program. Such leagues include volleyball, basketball, soccer, broomball and racquetball. Volleyball and basketball, in particular, draw strong participation Each season, all teams compete in co-recreational tournaments.
Haehn Center benefits:
The new student center and field house will benefit the intramural program next year, Bitzan said.
The intramural department is looking forward with great anticipation to the opening of the new Haehn Center," Bitzan said. The center will provide many different activity options for all students, staff and faculty."
Some of the new facilities that will be available in the Haehn Center include:
- a new aerobics studio which Is designed exclusively for aerobic classes
- a spacious exercise room will also provide a variety of new equipment including stair climbers, Nordic tracks, exercise bikes and much more
- the new field house will provide facilities for volleyball, basketball, badminton, tennis, joggjng, Softball and just about any other intramural activities
Because of the construction of the new center, intramural aerobic classes are taking place in the basements of Margretta and Regina residence halls. Bitzan advises checking the weekly gym schedules to find out where and when the classes are occurring.
SJU swings into spring
by Louise Watson Independent staff writer
The St John's University golf team is looking forward to the Mankato State Ibtiversity/Gustavus Adolphus College Invitational April 23-24. The Johnnies will face most of their MIAC competitors at the invite, which is the first of three the team will compete at this spring.
Because the spring golf season is used mainly to give players the chance to earn extra points to qualify for nationals, the season is relatively short.
Head coach Bob Alpers plans to use the season for this purpose, as well as to give first-year golfers more experience playing against good teams.
First-year students make up rough-
ly 50 percent of this year's team. Three of the team's first-year students competed on the conference team last fall.
"It is getting pretty exciting," said senior captain Ross Bullard. There arealotofyoungguysontheteam. In two, maybe three years, they are going to be a great team."
Bullard also owes the strength of thefreshmen toAlpers.
"He has really done a good job of recruiting for this year's freshman class," Bullard said.
Fortunately, the team's youth has affected it in more ways than one.
"Because we are a young team, we dant need to be pressured to set a specific score as a team goal," Alpers said. "We concentrate on improvement"
The team has consistently per-
formed well at the conference tournament where they have always placed in the top half of the MIAC. Last fall, the team placed fourth at conference.
"We were in third after the first day, but then we had a tough day," Bullard said.
The inconsistency of the team may have been the result of the weather.
'The wind, rain, water, grass and hole placement change day to day, and this can make a course that was easy for one player more difficult for another the next day," Alpers said.
In any case, Alpers looks forward to a great success.
"I am really proud of how hard everyone is working, and they keep getting better. They are a great bunch of guys," Alpers said.
