THE RECORD
Der Keller Placed In Storage
By Tom Hotz
The year of renovations and changes is here at St. John's. The dust has finally settled in the Quadrangle, leaving us with bright new carpeting, overhauled brick walls, and polished woodwork. Fr. Alberic Culhane has replaced (temporarily anyway) Fr. Michael Blecker as President of the University, and Fr. Roman Paur has taken over for Fr. J.P. Earls as Vice President of Student Affairs. But all that was changed was not replaced. Der Keller, as most returning students remember, was the on-campus pizza and beer pub which faithfully served late-night munchers during the last few years.
The Der Keller was unfortunately located below the bakery, directly across from Frank House. It was unfortunate because what was once Der Keller is now storage area for the Food Service. Pressed by the need for an easy access to many food items, the stored goods were moved from the butcher shop [Wz blocks away) to the old Der Keller. This move was necessary not only because of the inefficiency, but because of the dangers winter's elements impose on the driver of the shuttle truck and on pedestrians.
Although Der Keller's area will be helpful, it will not solve the storage problem completely. A new 1500 square foot storage building will be con-
structed between (and in the architectural flavor of) Frank and Greg Houses. A tunnel will connect this new building with the old Der Keller. One drawback to this improvement is that the big tree that is in the Frank House lawn will have to be cut down.
All these changes are part of a $400,000 Repair and Replace plan which will be paid off over the next eight years. Besides the storage changes, the kitchen and salad bar areas have been remodeled to make operating in the kitchen more efficient and to make the food lines shorter. New walk-in freezers have been installed, among numerous other kitchen appliances and utensils. The kitchen and dining room will be completed when all the new equipment arrives.
The construction and renovation are the major changes for the Food Service this year, but the installation of the Vali-Dine meal control system is the most notable difference. The Vali-Dine automatically registers students' meal card number and charges him with a meal. This system not only registers numbers and charges accounts, but it instantly counts the number of persons using their meal contracts, whether it be in the refectory, at Mary Cafe, or at St. Ben's. When asked how the losses last year compare with the price of the new system, Bob Phelan, Direc-

The Record is the officially stoned tablet of St. John's University. The etchings contained hereupon are not necessarily those of the Abbey, the University, or the student body. They have yet to emerge from the stone age.
Having cast down from the mountain their first three sets, Chiselers Franc Fennessy, John Gilmore, and Mike Hagstrom finally hammered out this tabloid. Chris Longbella, our boulder ball pro, keeps his eye on our bas reliefers Mary Knoblauch, Barb Mader, and Matt Larson — they're just hole-in-the-walls. The rest of our staff has yet to be chosen from among the common rubble.

tor of the Food Service, said, "It would scare me to even estimate the losses that occurred last year. As for the Vali-Dine system, it will undoubtedly pay for itself in the first year, if not during the first semester."
Mr. Bob Phelan
As for an alternative for Der Keller, the Student Executive Committee investigated the problem. Chairman Tom Lenard said, "At the September 14 meeting, I established a Der Keller Committee to meet with Bob Phelan and Roman Paur to discuss feasible alternatives for, and temporary solutions to, Der
Keller. We hope to have one or two open hearings to tell the students what the alternatives are for Der Keller and help them to understand that this is something that involves the future as well as the present. We don't want to rush into this because Der Keller is both a vital and traditional part of St. John's campus." Phelan expressed hopes that the alternative site for the new Der Keller would be wisely and thoroughly developed. The butcher shop is being considered, but Phelan hopes that someday the basement of Rat Hall will be turned into the pizza and beer pub, "suitable for parents and girlfriends alike."
During the past summer, beer was sold at Mary Cafe as a temporary solution to the abandoned Der Keller. But students were not enthused about having beer sold in a dorm. The Food Service Committee concluded that Mary Cafe is not a suitable replacement for Der Keller.
An SEC member advised that the Walter Reger room in the refectory be converted into the "campus pub" one or two nights a week, providing pizza {continued on pg. 3)
CCS Offers Help

This year, the Center for Counseling and Career Services (CCS) has taken the place of last year !s Center for Student Development. The Center, located in Quad 154, has taken the new title to give students a better idea of the services offered.
The CCS, as its title implies, is a place to go for counseling. The professional staff of psychologists, which includes Fr. Finian McDonald, OSB, Kirk Lamb, Nita Jo Rush Finn, and Fr. Bruce Wollmering, OSB, provides group counseling in areas such as divorce, sexuality, drugs, alcohol, stress, and death. And as the need arises they will provide personal counseling. The staff is also concerned with coping skills that keep a healthy person healthy.
Academic counseling is also available through the CCS. A course in Academic Effectiveness helps students build their study skills. Through the center, freshmen may receive free tutoring in any subject; Academic planning (or making sense of the Liberal Studies program) is another area in which the CCS can be very helpful.
As the other half of the title suggests, the center also provides career counseling. Through courses, workshops, January Term externships, and other aids, the staff can assist students in career-life planning. Mike Gregory, Director of Placement and Internships, is located in the new office also.
The new Center for Counseling and Career Services has a great deal to offer, and all students are invited to stop in and visit.
