Lettermen Launch Fund Drive To Improve University Stadium
• St. John's alumni lettermen, whose athletic history dates back to the first St. John's-St. Thomas football game in
1901, have begun a special fund drive which will finance the improvement and expansion of the university stadium. The drive is being inaugurated this month.
The alumni lettermen, 900 In number, are sponsoring the fund drive under the leadership of former head basebaU coach, Father Dunstan Tucker, OSB, who is now St. John's faculty representative to the MIAC. Assisting him on the executive committee are athletic director George Durenberger, and public relations director, Tom McKeown.
The immediate goal of the drive, which began with mailings to lettermen this month, is $27,000, the amount needed for the expansion of the present seating facilities. That sum would allow the university to build three more sections of seats which would accommodate 1,950 people. The stadium now seats 1,300, and the proposed expansion would provide room for a total of 3,250. The need for additional seats has been obvious for a number of years when crowds of 4,000 to 5,000 attend the homecoming, Gus-tavus, St. Thomas and St. Cloud football games in the fall. The growth of the St. John's Invitational Track Meet and the need of the stadium for non-athletic university activities have also accentuated the need for a larger stadium.
Before it has even been officially begun, the fund was $2,350 on the way towards its goal. One of St. John's first lettermen, Ignatius A. O'Shau-ghnessy, '02, who played in the first St. John's-St. Thomas football game, contributed $1,000. St. John's youngest lettermen, the present Monogram Club, pledged another $1,000

A graduate of the Prep school, Chick was an English major* His home is Chicago, 111. A honor roll student for three years in college, he also was a member of the Johnny Players and was a senior class representative at the Rules Revision O ongr ess this spring.

to the fund. The student lettermen presented Father Duns-tan with a check for $260 at the athletic banquet in May as the first installment on the pledge.
Other lettermen who have answered the appeal almost before it was made are Barney Meinz, '38, Melvin Kraus, '09, Dick Hassman, '24, Tim Donahue, '36, and Ernie Sowada, '39.
The athletic board of the university decided to go ahead with the fund drive last month, when they met with ten alumni letter-men from Central Minnesota. The lettermen were enthusiastic about the possibilities of the drive when they met with the board and members of the-administration. Alumni attending the May meeting were Ken Raymond, '30, St. Cloud; Barney Meinz, '38, St. Cloud; Earl Meinz, '36, St. Cloud; dmer Sieben, '40, and Otto Schaefer, '48, Melrose; and John Oallahan, '37, and Bill Blenker, '36, Albany.
The group decided to ask alumni lettermen to pledge an amount of $25 or more which can be paid over a three year period. It was hoped that the majority of the subscriptions would be returned soon after they are received, so that if the appeal to the alumni is successful, work could begin on the new seats by July 1. Then the sections would be ready for the first home football game against St. Cloud State, Sept. 11.
While the drive is sponsored by the lettermen alumni, contributions from all alumni are most welcome.
