FATHER OF AMBROSE
KOLL DIES AT CASS LAKE
On Tuesday evening of last week Ambrose Koll, a junior in the College, received the sad communication over the telephone that his father, Mr. M. Koll, of Cass Lake, Minn., had died. Mr. Koll had been ailing for some time, but it was not anticipated that his death was imminent.
The members of the Record herewith extend their sincere condolence to Ambrose, one of their number, who has over the last two years conducted the Alumni Column in a very capable manner.
DR. STANGL ADDRESSES JUNIOR-SENIOR LUNCHEON
Dr. Philip E. Stangl was the principal speaker at an informal "get-together," on Monday evening, of the Seniors and Juniors of the College. He spoke pointedly about the realities that would confront the collegeman when he has to rely on his own resources after college days.
The luncheon was provided by Father Virgil, Dean of College.
SEVENTY-SEVENTH COMMENCEMENT TO BE HELD SUNDAY AFTERNOON
Spring Meeting of
Conference Held
St. John's University, in the persons of the Rt. Rev. Alcuin Deutseh, the Rev. Virgil Michel, and the Rev. Walter Reger, was host to the spring meeting of the Presidents of the Association of Minnesota Colleges on Thursday, May 24. The delegations were not complete but the following institutions were represented: The University of Minnesota, Macales-ter College, Concordia College, Gustavus Adolphus, Carleton College, St. Olaf College, College of St. Thomas, and College of St. Benedict.
GLEE CLUB SINGS TO EAGLES CLUB WEDNESDAY
The members of the Glee Club sang before the Eagles Club in St. Cloud on Wednesday, May 23. That their music was greatly enjoyed may be judged by the fact that they were kept busy for an hour when they had been scheduled for a thirty minute program. The Quartette— Messrs. Geist, Mahowald, Duffy, and Molitor —with their popular group of numbers, and Mr. Gene Dupuch with his brilliant piano solos, made the evening complete. The national secretary of the Eagles, Mr. J. S. Parry of Kansas City, was very enthusiastic in his remarks to Mr. Holtz, as were all the members. The Glee Club is grateful to the Eagles, and, particularly to Mr. Harry Burns, the President, and to Mr. Matt Uberecken for the pleasant evening shown them.
Mr. Byron Holtz deserves a great deal of praise for his work with the group. He has been reluctant to take credit for it, as he considered the achievement due not to his labors but to the willingness of the members. It should be mentioned that all of the special arrangements were made by him. Seven of the larger numbers for the complete club, and all but one of the quartette numbers were arranged by Mr. Holtz at the cost of many tedious hours of work.
Interested groups look forward to a bigger organization next year. This year's club started with an octet and grew to thirty-five members. It was somewhat handicapped by the fact that a large percentage of the men did not read music, but in the future, selection will be restricted at least in this point. It is believed with much assurance that this year's club will be the beginning of a living tradition for better music.
Thirty-four Collegemen To Receive Degrees of Graduation
With mingled joy and regret thirty-four college graduates look forward to their commencement day, which, this year, is to be held apart from that of the College Preparatory.
For seventy-six years previous to this St. John's has sent her graduates into life and on this, the seventy-seventh commencement, the school will once more give to the world a group of young men imbued with its principles and marked with its influence. On the surface, it may seem to be just another graduation exercise, but nevertheless, there is a strong undercurrent of emotion in those closing exercises Sunday.
The exercises will begin Sunday morning with a Baccalaureate address by the Rt. Rev. Alcuin Deutseh, O.S.B., President of St. John's. At 2:45 the same afternoon the graduating seniors, arrayed in cap and gown, will proceed to the Auditorium.
There the Rt. Rev. President will preside at the conferring of degrees, diplomas, and medals. Thereafter he will introduce the Commencement speaker, Dean Richard E. Scammon of the University of Minnesota. Following the Commencement address will be the rendition of the Valedictory address by Matthias A. Himsl.
