Anniversary Festival Rivals Campus Events
Faculty, Students, and Guests Felicitate Fr. Innocent at Jubilee Celebration
By Joseph A. Weber
The celebration, on May 24, of the twenty-fifth anniversary of ordination to the priesthood of Rev. Innocent Gertken, O.S.B., in which the faculty, students, relatives of the jubilarian, and guests took part, proved to be one of the major events of the year. On the eve of the festival day the entire community of St. John's Abbey gathered to felicitate Father Innocent with a congratulatory program consisting of addresses and vocal and instrumental renditions.
In the morning of the 24th, at 8:30, the procession from the abbey to the church took place, in which the vested choirs, the seminarians, community members, and the Rt. Rev. Prelates escorted the Rev. Jubilarian, while the band boys paid their respects to their director by playing appropriate airs.
Arrived at the altar, the Rev. Jubilarian intoned the Veni Creator, which the several choirs joined in singing. Rev. Norbert Gertken, O.S.B., and Rev. Gilbert Winkelmann, O.S.B., were the deacon and subdeacon of the Mass, and Fr. Mathias Ethen, O.S.B., the master of ceremonies. Present in the sanctuary also were the Rt. Rev. Abbot Alcuin Deutsch, O.S.B., and the Rt. Rev. Abbot-Ordinary Severin Gertken, O.S.B., of St. Peter's Abbey, Canada, with their chaplains.
The festal sermon was delivered by Abbot Continued on page two
Architects Wind Up Year
With Field Work in Avon
The upper classmen in the department of architecture have been "whooping out" with Father Gilbert regularly during the last week to Avon where they spent their afternoons surveying the ground on which the new church will be erected. The church, as previously announced, has been planned by Father Gilbert with the assistance of his 'architects.' This very practical experience is rounding out the year's activity of his students. In addition to the regular classroom assignments, each Junior in the course has designed a church, a theatre, and a dwelling-house. During the last semester lecturers from the outside have been invited to address the students on subjects pertinent to their profession, building materials, building costs, and soon. This year Edmund Schae-fer and Edward Wirtz, will be graduated from the department.
Arts-and-Crafts Exhibit
Takes Place June 3 to 5
