St. Bens begins construction of newjgjprmitory south of Evin Hall in early MokSSofct.beneoct
By Patricia Mattern
CSB plans March 1 as the tentative ground breaking date for a new dormitory to be built south of Evin Hall according to Gary Berg,
president's assistant in charge of planning at CSB.
Last year's shortage in housing and the need to renovate Teresa Hall prompted CSB 's New Dormitory Building Committee to take steps in building a new dorm.
"The new dorm will alleviate some overcrowding on campus/1 Berg said. "And Teresa Hall is in need of major remodeling. Mechanical and life safety issues need to be addressed."
Summer conferences have also increased the growing need for more housing space on campus.
"We've tripled conference business since 1985 and our only restriction has been housing," said Dave Glenn, director of special events and member of the new dorm committee.
Committee members kept conferences in mind when designing the new dorm. The dorm contains a large meeting space and kitchenette which allows the special events staff to handle complete conferences right in the dorm said Glenn.
"Having the facility air conditioned will give us more to offer corporate clients/' Glenn said. "Corporate clients bring in a higher profit margin."
Glenn said he is pleased with the design .

makes a good impression on our own clientel and they are potential supporters of the campus," he said.
The new two-wing, three-floor dorm will house 150 students in 64 double rooms and 20 single rooms. Sister Susan Rudolph, housing director, said the rooms will be most similar to the rooms found in Aurora Hall and she, along with students, have t>egan to plajvjhe dorm's furnishings.
"As part of the furnishings, I think its important to have a good size desk top [similar to Aurora's,]" Rudolph said. "We've tried to pull out different good things from other dorms like the Corona lounges seemed to have more .pluses." Corona study lounges have sliding
dividers which Rudolph said allows "It looks very appealing and that for more flexibility.
Each floor will include a TV lounge, a study lounge as well as a computer lounge for its residents. Ground floor will have a courtyard in the back and architects plan a porch in the front of the dorm on third floor.
In the earlv Dlannine stages, Gary Grooters Architects sat down with the new dorm committee and they toured different dorms at CSB to get ideas for the new building.
"We got ideas from students. They said what they like and don't like and what they want to see," said Dave Leapaldt, architect at Gary Grooters.
In building the new dorm Gary Grooters wants it to blend well with the rest of the architecture on CSB's campus.

Tonight... Independent's
survival depends on SAB vote
The Independent is in immediate danger of termination-termination duo to lack o\ funds. As the-SAB requested in the fall, the Independent sought additional funding on Feb. 14 to maintain the cost of operation. Without the financial support comprised of CSB student activity fees, allocated by the SAB, the Independent will be forced to shut down. Without this funding, this will be the final issue.
The SAB will make their decision at a special meeting, Thurs. Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m., in the SAB office. This meeting is open to the public. Note that the location of the meeting may be changed.
SAB obligated to pay JFB request
By Mary E. Schmidt
The Student Administrative Board (SAB) is obligated to solely pay $5,700 to the Joint Events Council (JEC) to cover their request to the Joint Funding Board (JFB), since the St. John's Senate (SJS) voted against the allocation. According to JFB guidelines, when a joint repuest is made to the two student governments, and one of the boards denies the allocation, "the allocation will be funded entirely by the

CSB Board of Trustees to vote on tuition increase
Proposal adds $500 to students tuition bill
By Holly E. Holdgraf
CSB administrators proposed a tuition increase to the Board of Trustees for the 1988-89 school year raising current student tuition to about $7,195, but the final decision on the increase will be made Feb. 26.
The 1988-89 CSB tuition proposal will make first-year students face a higher tuition bill than upperclasswomen.
Mike Ryan, vice president of college relations, said the tuition will be on a differentiated plan. The planned increase adds approximately
$500 per year to the current $6670 tuition, and about $1000 more for first- year students.
Ryan said the tuition increase relates directly to the addition of language and mathematics requirements to the core curriculum for first-year students, making this primary year of education more costly than following years.
The additional funds provided by the overall tuition hike will be used to finance the education system at CSB.
Exact allocations of funds have not been determined, yet the
administration is proposing to hire more professors to departments, and having these holding higher degrees.
From the tuition rise, CSB faculty members will find a general increase in their salaries. A portion of the funds will go to further education for the faculty. These are all designed to improve the quality of education at both CSB and SJU, according to Ryan.
Administrators also hope to add more books to the Clemens library, and possibly increase computer access areas.
Because of inflation, CSB administrators expect annual tuition
increases. This year's proposed increase would actually be less than in previous years. Even with the increase, out of 17 private colleges in Minnesota there are still 14 schools with higher tuitions, and only one school with lower tuition than CSB and that is only by approximately $100.
As with any increase in cost, part of the money will be regenerated back into the system to go toward financial aid, but the amount of aid a student receives will not be affected by this increase.
