Concerns voiced over housing
by Pam Soimtag and Amy Van Bloom Independent editorial staff and staff writer
A meeting was held Wednesday by CORE members at St. Joseph City Hall to discuss and collaborate possible solutions to the off-campus housing problem.
CORE is made up of SL Joseph residents, council members, students, the police chief, the mayor, landlords and the dean of students from both colleges. It serves as a forum where viewpoints can be heard and addressed.
The meeting was called to order by Bob Helm, a person outside of the community, who was asked to come by St Joseph council member Ross Rieke, to moderate the meeting.
The intent of this meeting is to discuss residential problems with housing," Hdm said.
Each party member then had a chance to voice their concerns regarding the problem.
"Things had improved considerably last fall/ said Bud Reber, mayor of St. Joseph. "Last spring, residents of East Ash Street had property rights abused. Ufe are obligated to take actioa"
The residents said their main concern was the disrespect to their own properties. They do not like the fact that the morning after a party, they found that people had urinated or thrown-up in their lawns, and broken glass in the streets.
The people of the city are concerned and ready for action to be taken," said Cory Ehlert, council member and SJU alumnus.
The residents are grateful that people are concerned enough to show up for the meeting to try to get this resolved. They do not want to be afraid of the students any longer.
"There needs to be dual respect between residents and students," said Erin Logan, CSB senior and SL Ben's Senate and CORE member. "I don't feel respected by residents even though I have done nothing wrong.11
The students agreed that they need to take responsibility for their actions and have respect for the residents of St. Joe.
"A lot of problems came from students showing resentment to neighbors and neighbors showing resentment to the students," said Jason Vogtf off-
