O'Connell announces retirement
By David Sahota Independent news editor
Sister Coknan O£ormdl announced May 5 that she will retire as president of the College of St. Benedict at the conclusion of her second term on June 30, 1996.
O'Connell has served two five-year terms as president of CSB and believes it is time to retire.
Ten years is a significant length of time for this role," O'Cormell said. The important moment of service is to know when to end that service."
O'Connell stressed that she enjoys her role as president of CSB and is not retiring because of any personal or job-related problems.
MI think only rarely is a president effective after ten years," O'Connell said.
O'Connell spent ten years in the administration and 25 years as a faculty member of the theater department during which time she also served as chairperson.
*T am really very fond of St. Benedict's," she said.
Milestones O'Connell has accomplished during her presidency thus iar indude the dedication of Margretta and Lottie Halls; the addition of the Ardolf Science Center, the renovation of Teresa

Spring has arrived. Anally. College of St. Benedict and St. John's University students are taking advantage of the warm and sunny days. SJU senior Andy Haeg, above, is no exception. The month of May hires students away from the classroom and into the outdoors to partake in activities such as Frisbee, volleyball, tennis and Softball. This week is the last opportunity for students to relax before finals.
the next 14 months, but rather to gve the Board [of Trustees] adequate time to search for a new president and to plan carefully for a transition of leadership," O'Connell wrote.
O'Connell sees the next year as a challenging one.
The hardest part of a movement is the end," O'Connell said.
O'Connell also included in her letter eight tasks which she will occupy herself with during the next year. These tasks are to successfully conclude the capital campaign; orientate the new CSB/SJU Provost for Academic Aflairs, Dr. Clark Hendley; recruit trustees; fulfill CSB's 1995-96 institutional goals and objectives; complete work on the new policy on Board governance for CSB/SJU; establish a working relationship between CSB and the convent with the new prioress, Ephrem Hollermann, OSB; strengthen the coordinate and separate identities of CSB/SJU and continue service to state and national higher education organizations with the objective of raising the visibility of CSB/SJU.
O'Connell believes these tasks are important because they will be "laying the stage for the success of the new president."

Rev. Kevin Anderson to leave communities
byKenBaiiage Independent news editor
Rev. Kevin Anderson, the liturgst and associate campus minister at the College of SL Benedict is leaving his position after six years to take the position of lituigst at the Newman Center at St. Cloud State University.
Anderson, a Minnesota native and alumnus of St John's University undergraduate and seminary schools, begins his new position at the Newman Center July 16. He will be part of a four-person ministry team whose focus is on the students.
Because Anderson is a diocesan priest his decision to leave was not his own but by appointment of the Archdiocese.
The guy who is there now was there 12 years," Anderson said. "He has to go, and 1 always knew Td take his place."
Although Anderson's position at CSB is only a half-time position (he also teaches religion to grade 12 students at Cathedral high school), he performs many tasks for the CSB/SJU communities.
During his six years at CSB, Anderson's primary focus has been working with students planning the 6 p.m. Sunday mass. Anderson and his workers recruit volunteers and hold workshops to refreshen students on what to do during the liturgy. There are over 250 volunteers that assist in the Sunday liturgies.
Besides the Sunday mass, Anderson also gives one-on-one counseling to students, organizes retreats and plans the Tuesday night TEC masses.
The TEC mass is an opportunity for CSB/SJU students who have attended TEC retreats to worship together once a week, according to Donelle Privette, CSB senior and campus ministry employee.
When Anderson first took his position at CSB, he was not the lone liturgist but because of his success with the student mass he has since taken on the responsibilities by himself.
Tve come to be known as the priest on campus." Anderson said.
What is special about Anderson's Sunday liturgy in comparison to a city parish is that he addresses student issues and problems.
