This object was both dry and damp cleaned according to directions from a conservation expert when it was received at Clemens Library.
This original work is a rectangular, solid wood panel with a recessed center (creating raised borders) that is painted with a half-length figure depicting Jesus Christ, Savior of the World. The figure is identified by the Greek abbreviations IC XC inscribed in gold field that is background for the figure. Inscribed in the cross-bars drawn in the circle of Christ’s halo are the Greek letters evoking God’s self-disclosure to Moses from the buring bush: “the One Who Is” (see Exodus 3:14). Just above the figure’s shoulders is the Greek inscription naming him as “Savior of the World”.
Christ is portrayed wearing a red chiton (inner garment) with a white clavus (right shoulder band) and a blue himation (outer garment). His right hand is raised in benediction; his left hand supports a large, jeweled Gospel book.
The background, extending to and covering the raised border, has been covered in gold. A red border is painted around the perimeter of the panel. The painting has been distressed to look old.
The artist has signed his name in white paint just below Christ’s right hand raised in blessing.
Portions of the panel that are not painted or gilded are stained dark brown.
There is a leather loop stapled to top center back of the panel for hanging.
On the back of the panel there is a red seal that reads: “Hand Made Pefkis”. There is also a printed label that reads: “Certificate” followed by a statement of authenticity in Greek, English, German and Italian. “Exact copy of the strict Byzantine style (Cretan School—Theophanis ), created by Father “Pefkis”, qualified hagiographer of the Athoniados Ecclesiastical Academy in Agion Oros at Athos, with the genuine traditional colours with gold sheets on canvas on canvas on aged wood.” See http://www.pefkis.com.gr/en/start.html.
