Edwards and Farley leave Management Department
By Louise McCarthy
Editorial Staff Writer
Barb Edwards and Jack Farley received leaves of absence late this summer from the Management Department. Edwards, an associate professor, and spouse Farley, a tenured professor, surprised colleagues with their request.
The leaves of absence allow the professors to return after one year. Neither, though, are expected to return. Edwards has accepted a job offer from another university for the coming year and Farley is nearing retirement
Virginia Arthur, who replaced Edwards as management department chairperson, asserts that the parting is under amicable circumstances.
"I think [the two] saw other opportunities that were available to them/9 Arthur said. "For whatever reason these new opportunities seemed to be the right ones for them."
Edwards and Farley's departure comes in the wake of the 1993 dismissal of Mike
Norman, assistant management professor.
"There were separate issues in those circumstances," said Arthur. "In the management area you see a lot more turnover because we've got alternatives either being professors or working in business."
Edwards and Farley are credited with playing primary roles in the Organizational Leadership Program (OLP) in the Management Department. OLP, a 10 year-old program, is ayear-longsimu-lation project involving senior management majors. The program will now be taken over by Jane M. Lottie Hall, located adjacent to Margretta Hall, houses 248 stu-
dents as St. Ben's largest residence hall. Residents moved into the un-finishedbuildingSeptember5,and have lived alongside the construction process ever since.
It is the first campus building to install card-swipe machines at the entrances, allowingresidents to use their student I.D. cards to gain access into the building. With this
new system, the building remains locked on a 24 hour basis,
Lottie was designed with many open areas and balconies which allow sight-lines between floors. These features increase the sense of community for residents which Mary Geller, the new director of residence life and housing, hopes will make Lottie feel more like a neighborhood and less like a building.
Common lounge areas in Lottie each have a different style of furniture to recreate thevariety one would find from room to room in their own home. The kitchens, designed with student input, are furnished with oven, stove, re-
