In their meeting last spring on Sunday, May 17, the Student Administrative Board voted, after much research, to raise the spring activity fee for CSB students.
The vote was passed with stipulation that the Senate would be notified and asked to consider the same actioa Also, a letter will be sent to both the Independent and the Record in the fall explaining the decision. chair, first presented the idea to the SAB executive board last Spring when it was determined that appropriate allocations could not be awarded because of lack of adequate finances.
The number of organizations we have to fund and the rate of inflation over the past 10 years is what we are facing," said McNamara.
McNamara said that one argument against the increase is a decrease in total enrollment However, McNamara refuted this claim. "ITe activity fee can not be equated to the number of students. The reality is that we have less students and less money," said McNamara.

On June 26,1992, the College of St. Benedict installed a new telephone and voice mail system for the 1992-93 school year.
"The need to change the phone system is what brought on the phone system with voice mail," said Linda Fuchs-Johnson, director of telecommunications.
According to Fuchs-Johnson, the old phone system was 10 or 11 years
old. AT&T announced it would not support maintenance and repair on the old system. With the addition of the Ardolf Science Center, expansion of a system which would be difficult to repair was not feasible.
The newly installed phone system provides features that the old system did not. These include: personal authorization codes, direct dial to SJU, forwarding between campuses, universal abbreviated or speed dial, confer-

Who are the Ardolfs?

Everyone is aware of the new science center located on the College of St Benedict campus, but few probably are femiliar with the people behind the Lottie and Frank J. Ardolf Jr. Science Center.
The Ardolfs have provided the primary donation towards the construction of the new science center which subsequently now bears their name.
But who exactly are the Ardolfs, and why would they donate two million dollars to a school where none of their immediate family members have ever attended?

When asked why the SAB allocations were not printed in the Sept. 17, issue of the Record with those of the Senate and the Joint Funding Board McNamara said, "[The Record\ did not give us ample time to prepare."

Dietrich, Col man reveal long-term goals
by Chris Fourncllc and Trida Gardinler
Independent features editor and Independent news editor
In light of the up-coming year, the presidents of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University have issued the following goals and statements for the forth comingyear.
Brother Dietrich Reinhart outlined four key goals he wishes to meet during the 1992-93 school year.
The first goal concerns what he calls, "improvement of service" to the student body.
Reinhart intends to accomplish this goal through what he refers to as, "quality programs." These are groups of administrators and students who will meet under the direction of Norma Dickau to discuss vital issues concerning both faculty and students.
"We need to get faculty and students to participate where it really matters," Reinhart said.
The next goal concerns strategic planning for Saint John's. This means looking at the issues that surround the future considerations of students, the job market, and long-range economic planning.
"We need to start thinking about larger issues," Reinhart said.
Reinhart feels the administration also needs to consider what the university has to offer these students.
Reinhart defines his third goal as strengthening university resources. This mainly deal with university money management and budget issues.
"Money management, like charity, begins at homc.We can't take care of money outside |the university! if we can't take care of it inside," Reinhart said.
Reinhart and his CSB counterpart, Sister Colman O'Connell, are hoping to place both school's budgets on a two-

The last goal Reinhart wishes to concentrate on is what he calls "reposi-tionlingl Saint John's for more effective Outreach."
By expanding services to local areas, churches, and in the surrounding communities, Saint John's hopes to become a larger participant in the surrounding areas.
"We can't be just tending our own store," Reinhart said.
Reinhart also hopes these endeavors will bring additional revenue to the college, keeping the rising cost of tuition down.
Sister Colman O'Connell, president CSB, emphasizes a different goal, one which Saint John's plays a vital role in

process.
"Faculty can spend more time teaching than wonyjingl about getting something through committee," O'Connell said.
There are already various ways this goal is being implemented.
One of those ways is though the joint responsibility of the vice-presidents at SJU and CSB. In the past, departments had to report to both the CSB vice-president and the SJU vice-president as well. Any decisions required the consideration of both administrations, making movement in the individual departments time consuming and difficult.
Now, with joint responsibility, departments need only a decision from one of the vice-presidents.
