Building a Winning Tradition
by Michael Walsh
What does it take to be a consistent winner? Everyone has her own opinion -from coaches to players, sportswriters to fans. They all carry some merit, but they are far from absolute. Well then, what does constitute a true winner? Talent? Maybe, but not entirely. Coaching? Let's be serious. Desire? No one possesses that anymore (unless it pays off financially or physically). The true key to success and victory is simply the home field advantage. It is a trite little term, no doubt created by a balding, over-the-hill, cigar-chewing sports announcer who had a little too much to drink in the booth that day and has long since passed away (much to the chagrin of all the terminal cliche labeling sports personalities we are all too familiar with).
Go ahead and laugh, but don't brush off the idea prematurely. Through the history of mankind the home field advantage has played a crucial role. For example, how did David slay Goliath? Home field advantage. How did Moses part the Red Sea? Divine intervention, you say? Impossible; it was the home field advantage. What made the Roman Games so popular? The Coliseum, their home field advantage. What made William Shakespeare world famous? His talent? Well, Dr. Peters, Dr. Freedman and an array of other English professors on campus may disagree, but realistically it was the Globe Theatre that made the man. And how about the U.C.L.A. Bruin basketball team with their eighty-eight game winning streak during the reign of Coach John Wooden. Why did they win, you ask? Pauley Pavillion, ob-viouslv - one of the most prestigious col-
legiate basketball arenas in the country.
I think by now you get my point. With this in mind, would any rational individual call Rat Hall St. Benedict's home court? Of course not. What St. Ben's needs is the home court advantage it rightly deserves. Not just an average arena mind you, but one that reflects the true identity of the College. (Which could present an entirely new problem.) Remember, in today's society it is the packaging that sells the product.
Enter the administration of the College of St. Benedict's. Just like on a prime time soap opera, they arrive just in the nick of time. They, too, sense the crucial need of the elusive home field advantage, not only to instill a winning tradition at St. Ben's, but also to increase enrollment of incoming student-athletes awed by the as-of-yet unnamed athletic facility.
Congratulations Administration, for simultaneously enhancing the College and pulling the athletic program out of the Middle Ages.
When the facility finally opens in the next month or so, it will give the Blazer basketball program, as well as a host of other St. Ben's athletic programs, a much needed boost. Who can tell, maybe in a couple of years the St. Ben's students will become as feared (or loathed) as the infamous "Rat Pack.5' No matter what the outcome, it is a definite step in the right direction.
Now what about a new library? Or a domed stadium for the annual powder-puff football classic?
Swim Team Captain Marie Rickmyer.
The Blazer Swim Team started out slow with losses to SCSU, Carleton and St. Olaf but came through with a win over Macalaster last Saturday, December 1.
Gym construction continues while the Blazer Basketball team patiently waits for its first home game, to be held January 10 against Northwestern College. Don't miss this big event!
